A Day Without Electricity
A Day Without Electricity
November 21, 2018
Have you ever imagined what life would be like without electricity?
For the most part, we tend to take the convenience it adds to our lives for granted until there is a power outage during a storm or a problem with the wiring. We are fortunate to live in a country where homes with working electricity are the norm, and if there is a problem with your electrical system expert electricians are only a phone call away.
Since we make local electrical repairs every day at 24/7 Electric, we see constant reminders of electricity’s significance in daily life. We invite you to imagine a day without electricity from dawn ‘til dusk.
Wake up without your alarm clock.
Unless you have an old fashioned analog alarm clock with a bell, you will have to wake up with the sun. There are no digital alarm clocks or cell phones without electricity to power them. Light a candle or an oil lamp for your bathroom so that you won’t have to brush your hair and teeth in pitch black darkness. You might want to pick out your work clothes near a window to make sure they match.
Grab a simple breakfast.
There is no time to fire up the wood burning oven for anything too fancy, so you will just have to grab a piece of fruit. You might want to blend yourself a smoothie, but that’s going to require some pretty fancy knife skills without an electric blender. After you snack on an apple or a banana, it’s time to start the long journey to work.
Commute to work without a car.
Saddle up your favorite horse or jump on a bike and start pedaling. Since you don’t have a car to commute to work, you had to choose an office just a couple miles away from your home. When you arrive, you chain your bike to a rack or leave your horse in a stable.
Do all of your work by hand.
There are no computers, printers, copy machines, or digital databases in a world without electricity. Your office is full of file cabinets where information has been recorded by hand. You sit down at your desk and start scribbling away.
Return home for dinner.
You have to pedal or gallop your way back home after a long day at work. Your hand is cramping from writing so much. You pick out ingredients salted or pickled in your cellar or slightly chilled in your ice chest for dinner. There’s nothing too perishable since you don’t have a refrigerator. You cook dinner over the fire in your wood burning stove.
Relax until bed time.
Afterward, you have limited options for entertainment. Instead of catching the latest sports game on TV, you could read about it in a newspaper. Rather than binging episodes on Netflix, you could read a few chapters of a book. You could play solitaire, or invite some nearby neighbors over for a group card game. You can’t play any video games, browse social media, or scroll through updates on your favorite phone app. If you want to talk to someone, you will have to write them a letter instead of a text message or bike over to visit to them instead of talking on the phone. And don’t forget, you are doing all of this by the light of candles or oil lamps.
Can you imagine a day without electricity?
Once you start picturing all of the inconveniences a day without electricity would allow, it becomes obvious how much we all rely on this fairly recent luxury.
